Working with nature
our farms
Our farm in Lüderitz extends over an area of 27 hectares in one of the central bays of Lüderitz lagoon. Oysters are grown in baskets suspended from rafts. They are harvested weekly and shipped on ice to South Africa, where they are highly prized as some of the best oysters on the market.

Saldanha Bay, on the west coast of South Africa, is considered a prime site for the culture of bivalves like oysters and mussels. The bay is fed by pulses of cold, nutrient-rich water that moves in from the south, driven by strong offshore winds. The cold water provides an idea environment for the growth of plankton, a natural feed for cultured oysters and mussels.
The OceanGrown sea farm in Saldanha Bay is 15 hectares in extent. Oysters and black mussels are grown side by side on ropes suspended from longlines.
Just like any other farm, OceanGrown’s sea farms are regulated by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and must comply with environmental laws.
OceanGrown takes the environment and its environmental footprint very seriously. It complies with a rigorous environmental management programme which is audited by an external environmental consulting agency every month. This gives OceanGrown customers the assurance that the company’s products are produced in an environmentally sustainable and responsible way.
